There are purifiers available that claim they do not need replaceable filter cartridges. This is in fact one of their main selling points. The fact is however this should not be seen as a big selling point, because without replaceable cartridges the life of the purifier is greatly reduced. As time goes on the filtering ability of the purifier continues to drop.

The daily role of a water purifier is to filter out all the bad things that are found in common tap water, such as chlorine, pesticides, lead etc. A good water purifier will take out all of these impurities with different filtration methods. The cartridge plays a big role in this process.
As time progresses the cartridge will become less efficient, the more impurities in the water and the amount of water filtered will speed up this process. As the cartridge becomes less efficient, so does the entire water purifier.

You should however take into consideration how much a replacement cartridge for a purifier will cost before deciding on which purifier to purchase. It is best to buy a system with reasonably priced replacement cartridges, because this is an expense you will have to continually pay out. Some purifiers will be offered at what seems a great price, but the replacement cartridges will be expensive. It is best to avoid these purifiers.

Each cartridge works depending on the filtration method used in the system it will be installed within. This means that each is unique to it's own individual system. Which means that you will be unable to buy cheap cartridges and install them in a different purifier in order to save money.
